For UK universities to support up to 18 Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships in an institution’s key research field.
Please be aware that the Leverhulme Trust does not accept direct applications from graduates intending to pursue PhD studies.
The Trust Board has chosen to enhance its commitment to the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships scheme following a review, resulting in the following changes:
- Additional scholarship spots are available to help students from underrepresented groups pursue a master’s plus doctorate program.
- Applications will be accepted from consortia of no more than two universities.
- International students may be eligible for a restricted number of PhD fellowships.
Leverhulme doctoral scholarships Eligibility
Applications are welcome from any UK university.
To broaden the scheme’s reach and diversify the institutions supported by the Trust, proposals from consortia of up to two universities will be welcomed. To lead, one university and one primary candidate must be identified in the proposal. The principal applicant will submit the proposal and, if awarded, will be in charge of financial and reporting matters. The lead university would hold the funding contract.
An institution may submit just one application as the lead but may collaborate on many submissions in different subject areas.
Once a university has chosen its preferred offer, it should give the principal applicant’s name, departmental affiliation, and email address to Katharyn Lanaro at grants@leverhulme.ac.uk. Access will then be granted to the Leverhulme Trust Grants Management System.
How to apply for Leverhulme scholarship
Universities may submit just one application as the lead, although they may collaborate on numerous submissions in other academic areas.

Applications from other UK universities or organizations are not accepted.
A principal applicant must submit applications, and consortium proposals must identify a single principal applicant.
The application process consists of three steps:
A brief application form and a thorough statement were submitted by the lead university’s nominated principal applicant.
A statement of support from a designated university representative, such as the pro-vice-chancellor for research or someone in a similar function. Please remember that supporting statements from a designated representative from both participating universities are essential for consortia applications.
Institutional approval of the application: the lead applicant university’s normal procedure for approving Leverhulme Trust applications. Following the application deadline, supervisors will shortlist their applicants, interview, and nominate candidates for further interview by the Critical Decade LDS interview panel.
